About this project management plan template

This free project management plan template gives engineering, construction and consulting teams one place to plan a project before it starts and to keep the plan current while it runs. It follows the ten-section structure most consultancies use for their project plans, so a plan built here can go straight to a client or a project review.

The ten sections

  1. Project Information
  2. Scope of Work
  3. Time Management
  4. Financial Management
  5. Project Human Resource Management
  6. Project Process Control (Quality Management)
  7. Communications and Stakeholder Management
  8. Procurement
  9. Risk, Safety, Environment and Sustainability Management
  10. Project Specific Requirements and Manuals

Registers here, specialist tools where it matters

Short registers such as deliverables, personnel, procurement and verification schedules are filled in on this page. Larger registers, such as the programme, risk register, change orders, correspondence and cash flow, have their own free tools, and this page links to them. Your plan then points to one source for each.

Your data stays with you

The plan is stored in your browser and saved as a .json file on your own computer. Nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What is a project management plan?

A project management plan is the single document that says how a project will be run: what it delivers, when, for how much, by whom, how quality, risk and communication are controlled, and what is bought in. This template follows that structure in 10 sections.

Is this project management plan template free?

Yes. It is free, needs no login and no upload. Everything you type stays in your browser, and you save the plan as a .json file on your own computer.

How do I get a PDF of my project management plan?

Press Generate Plan Document. It opens a formatted plan with a cover page, a contents list and every section. Choose Save as PDF as the printer in the print dialog.

How does this connect to the other project management tools?

Sections that are better handled by a dedicated register, such as the Gantt chart, risk register, change orders, correspondence and cash flow, link straight to those free tools. The plan lists them, and you keep each register in its own tool.

How to use the Project Management Plan builder

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Follow these steps in order.

1

See a finished example

Press Load Sample Project. The ten sections fill with a sample highway project so you can see what each one holds. Replace it with your own entries as you go.

2

Fill in the document details and project details

Start with Document Control: your company name and logo, the revision history, who the plan is issued to, who approves it and the important notice. Then fill in section 1. These details appear on the cover and document control pages of your plan.

3

Write the narrative parts and fill the registers

Text boxes (scope, exclusions, communications protocol and so on) are for plain writing. Registers are tables: press + Add row, click any cell to type, and use the × at the end of a row to delete it. Contract deliverables with due dates build the milestone list in 3.1 by themselves.

4

Use the linked tools for the big registers

Risks, the programme, change orders, correspondence and cash flow have their own free tools. The blue cards open them in a new tab. Keep that data there. Press + Add to Annexures on a tool card to add an annexure page for its output, then export the tool's report as a PDF and put it behind that page.

Pictures, standard wording and annexures

  • Pictures: several sections have a Choose picture button for a figure such as the project plan, WBS, organisation chart or a sample letter. Pictures are resized to keep the saved file small.
  • Insert standard wording: boxes such as the communications protocol and the project execution notes have a button that fills in neutral starter text for you to edit.
  • Annexures: the last panel lists the outputs of your tools. Each annexure starts a new page in the plan document.
4c

Create the project folder

Press 📁 Create Project Folder, choose where your projects are kept, then type the folder name. The page creates that folder with one subfolder for each tool (Gantt, Risk Register, Actions, Variation Orders, Cash Flow, Correspondence and RFI), each holding the CSV file that tool imports, plus an Excel workbook with the same tables and your saved plan. A 00_PMP folder holds one CSV for each register of this plan. Your deliverables, internal deliverables, mobilisation, tasks and billing fill the Gantt and Cash Flow files; the project details fill the header of every tool. The Risk, Action, Variation, Correspondence and RFI files hold example rows in the sample project only, and just the heading row in a real project. Each tool then imports its file with its PMP Data Import button. Files that already exist are never overwritten. Chrome and Edge write the folder directly; other browsers download it as a zip file to unzip.

Work in a tool and come back

A tool card opens the tool in a new tab with an orange bar at the top: Return to Project Management Plan. In the tool, press 📁 PMP Data Import to load its file and the project details, work as usual, then press 📁 PMP Data Export to save the tool's table back into the project folder (the old file is kept as .previous.csv). Then press the Return bar, and on this page press 🔄 Refresh from Project Folder. The Data for the Tools panel then shows the row counts and key figures, and the plan document gets a Register Status Summary page.

5

Track progress

Set each section to Not started, In progress or Complete. The counter at the top shows how many sections are complete.

6

Save your plan and open it later

💾 Save Plan (.json) saves everything in one file. 📂 Load Plan opens it again on any computer. The note beside the Save button tells you whether you have unsaved changes.

Autosave in browser keeps your work in this browser only. It is not a backup. Use Save Plan for that.

7

Print or produce the plan document

  • 🖨 Print / Save as PDF prints this page as you see it.
  • 📝 Generate Plan Document (PDF) opens a formatted plan with a cover page, a contents list and every section, ready to save as PDF. If nothing opens, allow pop-ups for this site.
8

Choose the date format

Press 📅 Date format and choose how dates are shown and typed in every date box.
