About this NCR / Quality Control tracker
This tool builds a Non-Conformance Report register for a construction or manufacturing project directly in the browser. It is aimed at quality control managers, site engineers, inspectors and document controllers who need a presentable NCR log for a progress report or a client audit without opening dedicated quality software.
How to log an NCR
Record the description of the non-conformance, its category and severity, who raised it and when, and who is responsible for resolving it. Set a target closure date when the NCR is raised. As soon as an actual closure date is entered the NCR is marked Closed; until then it is Open, and it flips to Overdue the day it passes its target date unresolved.
Categories and severity
Each NCR can be classified by category — Material, Workmanship, Design, Documentation, Safety or Other — and by severity: Minor, Major or Critical. Classifying NCRs this way makes recurring problem areas visible in the breakdown charts rather than buried in a flat list.
What the summary reports
- Total NCRs raised
- Open, Overdue and Closed counts
- Closure rate — closed NCRs as a percentage of total
- Average days taken to close a resolved NCR
Getting data in and out
NCRs can be imported from an Excel or CSV file rather than typed one by one, with a date format selector for day-first, month-first and ISO conventions. The register exports back to CSV and prints as a PDF for issue with a quality report. Related meeting actions can be tracked separately in the action and minutes of meeting tracker.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Non-Conformance Report (NCR)?
A Non-Conformance Report records work, material or documentation that does not meet the specification, drawing or approved method. It captures what was found, who raised it, who is responsible for putting it right, and what corrective action closes it out.
What is the difference between an NCR and a CAR?
An NCR records a single instance of non-conforming work. A Corrective Action Request (CAR) usually follows when an NCR, or a pattern of NCRs, points to a root cause that needs a systemic fix rather than a one-off repair. Many projects track both in the same register, distinguishing them by category or reference prefix.
How long should an NCR take to close?
There is no universal figure; it depends on the severity and the specification's own requirements. A target closure date is set when the NCR is raised, and the tracker flags the item as overdue once that date passes without an actual closure date recorded, which is what makes closure performance measurable rather than anecdotal.
What should go in the corrective action field?
The corrective action should describe what was actually done to resolve the non-conformance, not just the intention, so the record stands as evidence at handover or audit. Rework instructions, replacement of material, or a design clarification are typical entries, each tied to the responsible party who carried it out.
How is the closure rate calculated?
Closure rate is the number of NCRs with an actual closure date recorded, divided by the total number of NCRs raised, shown as a percentage. It is a simple measure of how well the quality control process is keeping pace with the non-conformances being identified.
