Khasab Coastal Road — Sultanate of Oman

Detailed Design of a 42 km Coastal Road connecting Khasab with the coastal settlements of Musandam and extending towards Tibat

Project scope
42 kmCoastal highway
Client
Ministry of Transport & Communications, Sultanate of Oman
Role
Senior Design Engineer

Consultancy tenure: NESPAK · 1986–1998

Scope & engineering contribution

The Khasab Coastal Road comprised the design of an approximately 42 km coastal highway in the rugged Musandam Governorate of Oman. The road commenced at Khasab and passed through Uqda, Al Harf, Heey, Jadi and Bukha, extending towards Tibat. The route provided an important road connection to the coastal settlements and the UAE border area, while traversing steep mountainous terrain and sections immediately adjacent to the sea. The project was recognised for its challenging combination of coastal conditions and rugged mountain terrain.

As Senior Engineer, was responsible for the detailed design of the coastal road, including horizontal and vertical alignment, roadway geometry, earthworks, pavement and drainage requirements, and engineering solutions for sections constrained by the steep mountains and the sea. Particular attention was given to sections where the road alignment was located directly along the coastline and required construction of embankments into the sea.

A major engineering challenge was the design of the sea-facing embankment slopes and coastal protection system to withstand wave action, particularly the Shimal sea waves. The design incorporated rock-armour protection to safeguard the embankment toe and exposed slopes against wave attack, erosion and scour. The work required careful consideration of the coastal geometry, embankment stability, rock-armour sizing and placement, and integration of the road formation with the existing mountainous and marine environment. The resulting road became a notable engineering link along the Musandam coastline.
