Method & practical use

Understand the result.

Free online Gantt chart maker for design and construction schedules. Enter activities, dates, duration and percent complete, with working-day holidays.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the project details and reporting date; replace any sample records.
  2. Add or import your records, then review the summaries and outstanding actions.
  3. Save the project and use the available export or print controls to share the current report.

Units & method

Use the dates, quantities and currency shown in the workspace. Keep one currency and a consistent reporting cut-off.

Schedule activities using start/end dates, durations, working calendars, dependencies and progress. Calendar assumptions govern the resulting dates.

Method: the owner’s supplied worksheet and the arithmetic described above.

Worked examples

Illustrative inputs for checking the method; these are not project records.

Worked scenario

Example: a three-working-day activity starting Monday finishes Wednesday if all three days are working days; adding a Tuesday holiday shifts completion.

How to use the Design and Construction Gantt Chart

Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. If you are new to the tool, follow these steps in order.

1

See what the tool can do

Press Load Sample Data to fill the tool with a sample road project schedule. Then scroll down the page:

  • Project Setup — project name, client, start date, status date, date format and the weekly holidays. 📅 Holidays adds public holidays; activities skip them.
  • Program Summary — overall dates, duration and progress.
  • Road Activities — the activity table: WBS headings, codes, durations, dates, % complete, status, predecessors and resources (steps 4 to 6 explain how to work with it).
  • Activity Gantt — Bar Chart — the bars, links and progress drawn from the table.

The first time you open the tool (when there is no data of yours in this browser) the sample is loaded for you, so you can see how it works straight away. Replace it with your own entries, press + New Project / Clear All to start empty, or load your saved project.

Load Sample Data replaces the data in the tool. Save your own work first.

2

Set up the calendar first (Primavera-style working days)

Before entering activities, set the project calendar in Project Setup. The tool then counts days the same way as Primavera P6:

  • Weekly Holidays — select the non-working days of the week (for example Friday, or Saturday and Sunday).
  • Gazetted / public holidays — press 📅 Holidays and enter every gazetted holiday for the whole project duration at the start — a single day or a date range (such as Eid holidays), with its name. The button shows how many are set.
  • Durations are in working days, counting both the start and the finish day (an activity that starts and finishes on the same day lasts 1 day). Weekly and gazetted holidays are skipped, so a finish date moves past any holiday that falls inside the activity.
  • Lags on links are also in working days, and a linked activity starts on the next working day after its predecessor, as in Primavera.

If you add or change holidays later, the whole programme is rescheduled automatically, but it is best to set the full holiday list before you plan.

3

See how the data file looks

Press ⬇ Export Table (.csv). It downloads the activities as a CSV file that opens in Excel:

ColumnWhat to enterExample
No.Activity codeA100
ActivityActivity name (required)Earthworks Ch 0–2 km
Start Date / End DateDates in the format chosen in Project Setup01/03/2026
DurationWorking days20
% Complete0 to 10040
PredecessorsCode:Type:Lag — Type is FS, SS, FF or SF, Lag in days; separate several with a semicolonA100:FS:0;A110:SS:2
4

Enter your own data and import it

Replace the sample rows with your own activities. You can import the Excel file (.xlsx) directly, or a CSV. Then press ⬆ Import Table (.csv) and choose the file.

  • Columns are matched by their heading names, so keep the headings (their order does not matter). Headings such as "Task", "Finish" or "Progress" are also recognised.
  • Set the Date Format in Project Setup to match the dates in your file before importing.
  • If a row has a start date and a duration but no end date, the end date is calculated.
  • Import replaces all activities. The project setup is kept.
5

Add activities, WBS sections and resources

You can build and change the programme straight in the table at any time:

  • + Add Activity (below the table) adds a new activity at the end.
  • The + on an activity row inserts a new activity just below it. The + on a WBS heading row inserts a new WBS section, with its first activity, above it.
  • The × at the end of a row deletes it straight away. There is no undo, so save your project first.
  • Click any cell to change it. Type a duration and the finish date follows, working around weekly and public holidays.
  • The 🔗 on an activity row sets its predecessors and successors (FS, SS, FF or SF, with a lag in days).
  • The 📦 on an activity row adds resources to that activity: Material, Manpower or Equipment, each with an ID, name, unit, quantity and rate. The cost is worked out for you, and the report adds a Resource Summary for the whole project.
6

Arrange the table: column widths and sorting

  • Column widths — drag the divider between two column headings to make a column wider or narrower; double-click a divider to fit the column to its text. Reset columns puts the default widths back.
  • Sorting — click a column heading (No., Activity, Start Date, End Date, Duration, % Complete or Status) to sort by it; click it again to reverse the order. Tick Group by WBS to sort inside each WBS section, or untick it to sort all activities as one list. ✕ Clear sort returns to your own order.
7

Critical activities and the status date

  • Critical path — activities with zero float are outlined in red on the bar chart. Any delay to them pushes the project finish date.
  • Status Date (in Project Setup) — the date you are reporting against. It is drawn as a blue line on the chart, and every activity’s Status is worked out against it: Complete, On Track, At Risk, Behind, Not Started or Undated. Activities that are behind schedule or not started when they should be show in red, so you can see at a glance which work is not completed.
  • ⏩ Push Overdue Activities to Status Date takes incomplete activities that should already have started and schedules their remaining work from the status date. It tells you how many activities it will move and asks first. % Complete is not changed, and moving the status date back undoes it.
  • A date shown with * is fixed by a constraint. Clear all constraints (*) removes them, so linked activities follow their predecessors again.
8

Save your project and open it later

💾 Save Project (.json) saves the project setup, holidays and all activities with their links in one .json project file. 📂 Load Project opens that file again, on any computer.

The note beside the Save button tells you whether you have unsaved changes or when you last saved. If you try to close or leave the page with unsaved changes, the browser asks you to confirm first (not needed when Autosave is ticked, because your work is kept in this browser).

Use the project file for backups and for sharing with colleagues. Don't edit it by hand.

9

Print, PDF and report

  • 🖶 Print / Save as PDF prints the activity table and bar chart. Choose what the printed table shows in the Print layout list next to the button. To get a PDF, choose Save as PDF as the printer in the print dialog.
  • 📽 Save as PPTX saves the Gantt chart as a PowerPoint file for presentations.
  • 📄 Generate Report opens a schedule report in a new tab, where you can print it or save it with ⇩ Download HTML. If nothing opens, allow pop-ups for this site.
10

Other buttons and options

  • Autosave in this browser (tick box) — while ticked, your work is kept automatically in this browser and comes back the next time you open the page. It stays only on this computer and browser. It is not a backup; use Save Project for that.
  • 👁 View Current Data jumps to the main table so you can check what is entered.
  • + New Project clears the project details and all activities (it asks first).
  • Clear All removes all activities but keeps the project details (it asks first).
11

Choose the date format

Press 📅 Date format in the toolbar and choose how dates are shown and typed in every date box: DD/MM/YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, DD-MM-YYYY, DD.MM.YYYY or DD-Mon-YYYY. Type a date in that format, or click the 📅 in a date box to pick it from a calendar. A date that doesn't fit the format is outlined in red and not accepted.

The same format is used in the printout and in the generated report and its PDF. It changes only how dates look — your saved project and CSV files are not affected. Your choice is remembered in this browser for every tool on this site.
