Method & practical use

Understand the result.

Free project risk register and 5x5 risk matrix. Score likelihood and impact, track mitigation, owners and status, and import or export from Excel and CSV.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the project details and reporting date; replace any sample records.
  2. Add or import your records, then review the summaries and outstanding actions.
  3. Save the project and use the available export or print controls to share the current report.

Units & method

Use the dates, quantities and currency shown in the workspace. Keep one currency and a consistent reporting cut-off.

Score each risk as likelihood × impact on the selected 1–5 scales. Prioritise with the displayed thresholds and track mitigation ownership.

Method: the owner’s supplied worksheet and the arithmetic described above.

Worked examples

Illustrative inputs for checking the method; these are not project records.

Worked scenario

Example: likelihood 4 × impact 5 gives a score of 20; likelihood 2 × impact 3 gives 6. A score is a ranking aid, not a statistical probability.

Frequently asked questions

What does this tool calculate or track?

Which units and assumptions should I use?

Use the dates, quantities and currency shown in the workspace. Keep one currency and a consistent reporting cut-off. Score each risk as likelihood × impact on the selected 1–5 scales. Prioritise with the displayed thresholds and track mitigation ownership.

Can I save or share the result?

Use the save, export and print controls shown in this workspace. Where CSV export is available, the exported data can be opened in a spreadsheet. Browser print can save a PDF.

How to use the Risk Register and Risk Matrix

Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. If you are new to the tool, follow these steps in order.

1

See what the tool can do

Press Load Sample Data to fill the register with sample design and construction risks. Then scroll down the page:

  • Project Setup — project name, client, date, who prepared it and the date format used for imports.
  • Risk Summary — counts by risk level and status.
  • 5×5 Risk Matrix — where each risk sits by likelihood and impact. Use All Phases, Design and Construction to filter by phase.
  • Risk Register — one row per risk. The score (likelihood × impact) and level are calculated.

The first time you open the tool (when there is no data of yours in this browser) the sample is loaded for you, so you can see how it works straight away. Replace it with your own entries, press + New Project / Clear All to start empty, or load your saved project.

Load Sample Data replaces the data in the tool. Save your own work first.

2

See how the data file looks

Press ⬇ Export Table (.csv). It downloads the register as a CSV file that opens in Excel:

3

Enter your own data and import it

Replace the sample rows with your own risks. You can import the Excel file (.xlsx) directly, or a CSV. Then press ⬆ Import Table (.csv) and choose the file.

  • Columns are matched by their heading names, so keep the headings (their order does not matter). Headings such as "Probability", "Severity" or "Hazard" are also recognised.
  • Import replaces all risks. The project setup is kept.
4

Add, edit and delete rows

You can also work straight in the table on the page at any time, with or without a CSV:

  • + Add Risk adds a blank row. Click any cell to fill it in or change it.
  • The × at the end of a row deletes that risk straight away. There is no undo, so save your project first.
5

Save your project and open it later

💾 Save Project (.json) saves the project setup and all risks in one .json project file. 📂 Load Project opens that file again, on any computer.

The note beside the Save button tells you whether you have unsaved changes or when you last saved. If you try to close or leave the page with unsaved changes, the browser asks you to confirm first (not needed when Autosave is ticked, because your work is kept in this browser).

Use the project file for backups and for sharing with colleagues. Don't edit it by hand.

6

Print, PDF and report

  • 🖶 Print / Save as PDF prints the page as you see it, in print-friendly colours. To get a PDF, choose Save as PDF as the printer in the print dialog.
  • 📋 Generate Report opens a risk assessment report in a new tab, where you can print it or save it with ⬇ Download Report (.html). If nothing opens, allow pop-ups for this site.
7

Other buttons and options

  • Autosave in this browser (tick box) — while ticked, your work is kept automatically in this browser and comes back the next time you open the page. It stays only on this computer and browser. It is not a backup; use Save Project for that.
  • 👁 View Current Data shows all entered data in a window.
  • + New Project clears the project details and all risks (it asks first).
  • Clear All removes all risks but keeps the project details (it asks first).
8

Choose the date format

Press 📅 Date format in the toolbar and choose how dates are shown and typed in every date box: DD/MM/YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, DD-MM-YYYY, DD.MM.YYYY or DD-Mon-YYYY. Type a date in that format, or click the 📅 in a date box to pick it from a calendar. A date that doesn't fit the format is outlined in red and not accepted.

The same format is used in the printout and in the generated report and its PDF. It changes only how dates look — your saved project and CSV files are not affected. Your choice is remembered in this browser for every tool on this site.
