Box Culvert Quantities Estimator

Box Culvert Quantity and Cost Calculator

Estimate concrete, reinforcement allowances and costs for a box culvert from its dimensions and entered rates.

Set the barrel dimensions and standard headwall geometry (parapet, wing walls, apron and toe wall) to calculate quantities of excavation, concrete (OG/UG/Elevated), lean concrete, reinforcing steel and riprap, with costs based on user-defined unit rates or standard local Authority/Department BOQ rates.

Barrel Geometry

Length runs along the waterway (flow direction); span & height are the clear cell opening.

Head Wall, Wing Wall, Apron & Toe Wall

Applied at both ends of the barrel. Skew angle is recorded for the record only — it is not yet used in the volume formulas.

Reinforcement Steel Ratio

Applied to the concrete volume of each structure to estimate steel weight.

Unit Rates

Edit to match your current schedule of rates.

Method & practical use

Understand the result.

Estimate concrete, reinforcement allowances and costs for a box culvert from its dimensions and entered rates.

How to use this tool

  1. Select the geometry or design case and confirm the displayed units.
  2. Replace sample inputs with the project values, then calculate or review the live result.
  3. Check the method, assumptions and output; save or print the calculation with its input record.

Units & method

Dimensions m; concrete m³; reinforcement ratios kg/m³; steel t; rates in the entered currency per unit.

Quantities come from geometric volumes and counts. Steel mass uses the entered allowance rather than a bar-bending schedule. Cost is quantity × unit rate, plus the entered contingency. This is a takeoff tool; structural capacity and hydraulic sizing are not checked.

Method: the owner’s supplied worksheet and the arithmetic described above.

Worked examples

Illustrative inputs for checking the method; these are not project records.

1-cell barrel takeoff

Each clear cell is 2 × 2 m, barrel length 10 m, slabs and walls 0.25 m thick, with haunches set to zero. Outside width is 2.5 m; slabs plus walls total 22.50 m³ of barrel concrete. At 100 kg/m³ the barrel steel allowance is 2.250 t.

2-cell barrel takeoff

Each clear cell is 2 × 2 m, barrel length 10 m, slabs and walls 0.25 m thick, with haunches set to zero. Outside width is 4.75 m; slabs plus walls total 38.75 m³ of barrel concrete. At 100 kg/m³ the barrel steel allowance is 3.875 t.

Frequently asked questions

What does this tool calculate or track?

Estimate concrete, reinforcement allowances and costs for a box culvert from its dimensions and entered rates.

Which units and assumptions should I use?

Dimensions m; concrete m³; reinforcement ratios kg/m³; steel t; rates in the entered currency per unit. Quantities come from geometric volumes and counts. Steel mass uses the entered allowance rather than a bar-bending schedule. Cost is quantity × unit rate, plus the entered contingency. This is a takeoff tool; structural capacity and hydraulic sizing are not checked.

Can I save or share the result?

Use the save, export and print controls shown in this workspace. Where CSV export is available, the exported data can be opened in a spreadsheet. Browser print can save a PDF.

How to use the Box Culvert Quantities Calculator

Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. If you are new to the tool, follow these steps in order.

1

See what the tool can do

Press 📋 Load Sample Data to fill in a typical culvert (it resets every input to the default values). Then scroll down the page:

  • Barrel Geometry — location, length, span, height, number of cells, slab and wall thickness, haunches and lean concrete.
  • Head Wall, Wing Wall, Apron & Toe Wall — parapet, wing walls, skew, fill slope, apron, toe walls and riprap.
  • Reinforcement Steel Ratio and Unit Rates — steel in kg per m³, rates for each item and the contingency.
  • Results — press Compute Quantities & Cost for the quantities and cost. Show detailed breakdown lists how each quantity is built up, and Copy as CSV copies the results.

Load Sample Data replaces your inputs with the defaults. Save your own work first.

When you open the tool it already holds sample values, and a yellow bar says You are looking at sample data. The bar goes away as soon as you type your own values or load a saved project.

2

See how the data file looks

Press ↓ Export Table (.csv). It downloads the bill of quantities (items, quantities, rates and costs) for the last Compute as a CSV file that opens in Excel. Compute a result first.

3

Import your own inputs

↑ Import Table (.csv) reads a two-column CSV: a field ID in the first column and its value in the second. It fills in any input it recognises and ignores the rest, so you can keep your standard unit rates in a small file.

Field IDWhat it setsExample line
rateExc, rateOG, rateUG, rateEle, rateLean, rateSteel, rateRiprapUnit rates: excavation, concrete (OG, UG, elevated), lean concrete, steel, ripraprateSteel,950

hSkew, hFillSlope, hApronT, hToeD, hRiprapLSkew angle, fill slope, apron thickness, toe wall depth, riprap lengthhSkew,15

The exported BOQ is a results table, not an input file, so it can't be imported back.

4

Save your project and open it later

💾 Save Project (.json) saves every input on the page in one .json project file. 📁 Load Project opens that file again, on any computer.

The note beside the Save button tells you whether you have unsaved changes or when you last saved. If you try to close or leave the page with unsaved changes, the browser asks you to confirm first.

Use the project file for backups and for sharing with colleagues. Don't edit it by hand.

This tool does not autosave. Save your project before closing the page.

5

Print, PDF and report

  • 🖨 Print / Save as PDF prints the inputs and the quantity and cost results. Compute a result first. To get a PDF, choose Save as PDF as the printer in the print dialog.
6

Other buttons and options

  • 👁 View Current Data computes if needed and jumps to the results.
  • Reset to defaults puts every input back to its default value.
