Road Cost Estimator

Single and Dual Carriageway Cost Estimator

Explore preliminary road quantities and user-entered rates in a development worksheet.

Development version · Check quantities and rates before using an estimate.

Set the cross-section widths, pavement layer thicknesses, fill height and slope — the sketch above the inputs redraws live — then price pavement, earthwork, guardrail, marking, signage, drainage and ancillary items against your own unit rates.

Method & practical use

Understand the result.

Explore preliminary road quantities and user-entered rates in a development worksheet.

How to use this tool

  1. Select the geometry or design case and confirm the displayed units.
  2. Replace sample inputs with the project values, then calculate or review the live result.
  3. Check the method, assumptions and output; save or print the calculation with its input record.

Units & method

Road length km; widths and earthworks m; pavement layer thicknesses cm; quantities use the unit shown in each row; prices use the entered currency.

Earthworks and pavement quantities are multiplied by input rates. This application remains under development; no live market rates or verified tender estimate are supplied. It is excluded from the keyword priorities.

Method: the owner’s supplied worksheet and the arithmetic described above.

Worked examples

Illustrative inputs for checking the method; these are not project records.

1 km top-layer check

For a 10 m initial width, 5 cm top layer and the worksheet’s 1:1 layer-width allowance, average width is 10.05 m. Across 1 km and 1 carriageway(s), top-layer quantity is 502.50 m³. This checks one development-model quantity only.

2 km top-layer check

For a 10 m initial width, 5 cm top layer and the worksheet’s 1:1 layer-width allowance, average width is 10.05 m. Across 2 km and 2 carriageway(s), top-layer quantity is 2,010.00 m³. This checks one development-model quantity only.

Can I save or share the result?

Use the save, export and print controls shown in this workspace. Where CSV export is available, the exported data can be opened in a spreadsheet. Browser print can save a PDF.

How to use the Single and Dual Carriageway Cost Estimator

Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. If you are new to the tool, follow these steps in order.

1

See what the tool can do

Press Load Sample Data to fill the Single Carriageway tab with a sample road. Then scroll down the page:

  • 01 Single Carriageway and 02 Dual Carriageway — two separate estimates; switch between them with the tabs. The toolbar buttons work on the tab you are looking at.
  • Road inputs — length, widths, layer thicknesses and the other quantities that drive the estimate.
  • Cost table — one row per item with unit, quantity, rate and cost, then the subtotal, preliminaries (14 %) and grand total.

Load Sample Data replaces the data in the tool. Save your own work first.

When you open the tool it already holds sample values, and a yellow bar says You are looking at sample data. The bar goes away as soon as you type your own values or load a saved project.

2

See how the data file looks

Press ⬇ Export Table (.csv). It downloads the cost table of the tab you are on as a CSV file that opens in Excel:

ColumnWhat to enterExample
DescriptionItem description, exactly as in the tableAsphalt wearing course
UnitUnit of measurem²
QtyQuantity12500
RateUnit rate4.20

Enter your own data and import it

Change the quantities or rates in the exported file and save it. Then press ⬆ Import Table (.csv) and choose the file.

  • Rows are matched to the table by their Description, so don't change the descriptions. Rows that don't match are skipped.
  • Qty and Rate are read from each matched row; for lump-sum items the Cost is read.
  • Import updates the tab you are on; the subtotal and totals are worked out again.
4

Save your project and open it later

💾 Save Project (.json) saves both tabs in one .json project file. 📁 Load Project opens that file again, on any computer.

The note beside the Save button tells you whether you have unsaved changes or when you last saved. If you try to close or leave the page with unsaved changes, the browser asks you to confirm first (not needed when Autosave is ticked, because your work is kept in this browser).

Use the project file for backups and for sharing with colleagues. Don't edit it by hand.

5

Print, PDF and report

  • 🖨 Print / Save as PDF prints the cost estimate of the tab you are on. To get a PDF, choose Save as PDF as the printer in the print dialog.
6

Other buttons and options

  • Autosave in this browser (tick box) — while ticked, your work is kept automatically in this browser and comes back the next time you open the page. It stays only on this computer and browser. It is not a backup; use Save Project for that.
  • 👁 View Current Data shows the cost table in a window, where Copy CSV copies it and ⬇ Download CSV saves it.
  • + New Project resets both tabs (it asks first).
